A suitable CNC machine tool can not only perform precise cutting but also address issues such as tool wear. Below is a method for selecting a CNC milling machine, CNC lathe, or CNC machining center based on the characteristics of processing aluminum, steel, copper, and plastic.

Aluminum material:

Aluminum is easy to cut, but its softness can lead to the formation of built-up edge on cutting tools, thereby reducing surface finish. The solution is to increase cutting speed and ensure good chip evacuation. Vertical machining centers or five-axis CNC machining centers equipped with 10,000+ RPM spindles, polished carbide cutting tools, and through-axis coolant can eliminate this problem. For turning, CNC lathes equipped with high-speed rapid traverse devices can shorten cycle time. The key machine tool requirements are spindle speed and a responsive feed drive.

Steel:

Steel generates substantial cutting forces and heat. If the rigidity is insufficient, the machine tool may vibrate, leading to poor surface quality and rapid tool wear. Therefore, the spindle must provide high torque at a relatively low speed (4,000–8,000 RPM), and heavy-duty vertical machining centers or horizontal machining centers are optional. For turning processes, it is advisable to choose a slant-bed CNC lathe equipped with a sturdy turret and high-pressure coolant to control chip breaking and heat dissipation. For steel processing, selecting a machine tool with reliable structural rigidity is crucial.

Copper:

The ductility of copper makes it prone to burring and tearing. Precise control of the feed per tooth and shallow cutting depth is required during machining. Using a small precision CNC lathe equipped with sharp positive rake inserts can produce smooth threads and a polished diameter. For milling, a compact CNC machining center equipped with fine feed control and minimal spindle deflection can prevent edge chipping. The accuracy of the machine tool in maintaining a constant feed rate is more important than raw power.

Plastic:

Plastics soften under the influence of frictional heat. Therefore, a machine capable of operating at high spindle speeds with extremely low cutting forces is crucial. A spindle speed of 10,000–20,000 RPM, coupled with chip evacuation using a single-flute tool, yields the best results. A CNC lathe equipped with a polishing tool and rapid feed can produce smooth plastic parts without melting them. The machine must be capable of achieving precise feed control and rapid chip evacuation to prevent heat transfer to the parts.

Aluminum material: Utilize high-speed VMC or five-axis milling machines to enhance machining speed and chip evacuation efficiency.

Steel: In heavy-duty vertical machining centers (VMC), horizontal machining centers (HMC), or slant-bed lathes, priority should be given to rigidity and torque.

Copper: Choose a small lathe or compact machining center to achieve precise and sharp tool control.

Plastics: Use high spindle speed, low force, and air cooling on small VMC or CNC lathes.
